The Calile Hotel

Travertine, palms, and an azure pool — an idyllic destination, with a design strategy that humanises the typical hotel experience.

Out with cold conference rooms and clinical stainless steel; in with warm travertine, brass, and sunshine. The Calile Hotel is a new kind of resort, an urban retreat inspired by Brisbane’s languorous lifestyle and sub-tropical climate.

The city and resort’s care-free atmosphere extends to our design approach: welcoming and guiding new arrivals in-person with custom, integrated wayfinding; in-room, via amenities that engage and centre; and online, with a digital experience that is both accessible and alluring.

A desire for the tactile and sensory also inspires design interventions within guest suites. Architectural details synonymous with the resort — like its distinctive arches — are echoed in arched cut-outs for key wallets and also door hangers, constructed with perfectly-imperfect box board and contrastingly precise foil details. In-room compendiums do away with dull bullet points for inviting, custom illustrations by artist Jessica Meyrick, and a wrap cover that doubles as a map to help guests explore the local area.

Working closely with architects Richards & Spence and developers Calile Malouf Investments, we rethought how a hotel brand could communicate a sense of destination. The result reflects The Calile Hotel’s unique material palette and architecture, imbues the hotel’s aim to surprise and delight, and enriches the experience of its guests and visitors alike.
